Slab Finish Options

There is a range of slab finish options to consider that add to the look and feel of your slab surfaces. Each finish offers a unique texture and sheen, allowing you to create the perfect balance of style and functionality for your countertops, backsplashes, and more.

Polished – Surfaces will appear glossy and visually striking. This finish is not recommended for shower floors due its slipper nature.

Honed – Surfaces with a honed finish are smooth, matte or satin-like due to the grinding and honing the material to achieve a non-reflective appearance. Materials with this finish can be used on shower floors due to the non-slip nature that he honing process creates.

Leathered – Surfaces are textured or slightly rough. This look and feel is created by the tumbling or brushing of the material giving off a matte look with quite a bit of depth and character. This may also be used on a shower floor due its non-slippery nature.

Countertop Edge Profiles

Miter

The process of cutting the edges of a stone slab (such as granite, marble, or quartz) at an angle—usually 45 degrees—so that two edges can be joined together to create a clean, seamless corner or edge. This technique is commonly used in the fabrication of countertops, vanities, and other stone installations where a sharp, precise joint is needed. Mitered edges are often used to create the appearance of a thicker countertop or edge profile, even if the actual material thickness is standard. A miter is the only suitable edge profile for porcelain products. Porcelain is not through-body.

Laminate or Sandwich Edge

A laminate or sandwich edge on a countertop refers to a fabrication technique used to make the countertop appear thicker and allow the fabricators to essentially carve out more decorative edge profiles. A laminate edge is made by gluing an additional strip of quartz or natural stone under the edge of the countertop. This edge is not suitable for porcelain products. Porcelain is not through-body.

Plywood Subtops

Plywood subtops are required when the countertop is not a standard 3cm or 2cm thickness. If the design intent is to build up the total countertop thickness utilizing a miter or laminate edge, this will leave an empty cavity in between the stone top and base cabinets. Plywood is used to fill the void to support the stone and ensure the countertop edge does not interfere with cabinet drawers, etc.

Waterfall Edge

A design where the countertop's edge extends down the side of the cabinets, creating a smooth, flowing look. The stone "falls" to the floor. Best for modern, minimalist designs, especially in kitchens with an island. It works well with materials like quartz and marble.

Edge Details

When selecting edge details for countertops, you’re choosing the shape and finish of the outer edge of the countertop. These details can greatly influence the overall look and feel of your kitchen or bathroom, adding a touch of elegance or a more modern, sleek design. Depending on the material, style, and preference, there are several edge options to consider:
